An engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, supported by dolphins and attended by cherubs. The work exemplifies Carracci's classical style and technical skill as a printmaker.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, supported by dolphins. Carracci was an Italian painter, printmaker, and draughtsman. Along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, he was one of the founders of the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna. This academy promoted a return to classical principles in art, reacting against the prevailing Mannerist style. Carracci's work is characterised by its emphasis on naturalism, clarity, and emotional expression. The composition shows Venus seated upon a group of dolphins, surrounded by cherubic figures. She holds a billowing cloth overhead, its folds rendered with careful attention to light and shadow. The dolphins are depicted with anatomical accuracy, their forms conveying a sense of movement and energy. The cherubs add a playful element to the scene, their poses and expressions suggesting a sense of joy and adoration. The engraving technique is evident in the fine lines and cross-hatching that define the forms and create tonal variations. The overall effect is one of classical grace and harmony, reflecting Carracci's artistic training and his interest in classical antiquity.
