A nineteenth-century Dutch woodcut print by Jan de Lange (II) depicting the four seasons through rural genre scenes and accompanying verse.
This woodcut print, titled Vier jaargetijden, is a characteristic example of nineteenth-century Dutch popular imagery. Produced by Jan de Lange (II) and published by Mindermann en Comp. in Amsterdam, the work presents a four-part narrative sequence depicting the progression of the seasons. Each quadrant illustrates a distinct phase of the agricultural and domestic calendar, accompanied by Dutch verse that describes the seasonal shifts in nature and human activity.
The top-left panel represents Spring, showing figures in a pastoral setting with livestock and budding trees. The top-right panel depicts Summer, featuring a harvest scene with workers in a field. The bottom-left panel captures Autumn, with figures gathering fruit from trees, while the bottom-right panel portrays Winter, showing a figure hauling a load of firewood through a cold, sparse environment. The style is functional and direct, typical of broadsides or educational prints intended for a wide audience. The lines are bold and clear, designed for the limitations of woodblock printing techniques common in the period.
This print serves as a record of traditional rural life and the cyclical nature of the seasons as understood in the early to mid-nineteenth century. The inclusion of text below each image integrates the visual narrative with didactic poetry, a common feature of European popular prints of the era. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and discolouration, which are consistent with its history as a mass-produced item. The composition is divided into four equal frames, creating a structured grid that guides the viewer through the temporal sequence. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Netherlands during the nineteenth century, reflecting the values placed on seasonal labour and the observation of the natural world.
