Van Hoytema's career took an unexpected turn when he became deeply involved with the Theosophical Society. This spiritual quest profoundly influenced his art, leading him to explore themes of interconnectedness and the underlying unity of all living things. His designs became more symbolic, reflecting his belief in a hidden order within nature. Despite facing financial struggles throughout his life, Van Hoytema remained committed to his artistic vision, producing a body of work that continues to enchant and inspire.
Though he died in relative obscurity in 1917, Theo van Hoytema's legacy has experienced a well-deserved revival. His prints, particularly those featuring storks, owls, and other birds, are now highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts.
