A painterly study of the Virgin and Child, derived from Titian's Pesaro Madonna, rendered with expressive brushwork and deep, atmospheric shadows.
This work by the Norwegian painter Carl Peter Teigen is a study derived from the celebrated Pesaro Madonna, a masterpiece originally painted by the Venetian master Titian in the early sixteenth century. Teigen focuses his attention on the central figures of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, isolating them from the complex architectural and donor-filled composition of the original altarpiece.
Teigen employs a painterly approach that prioritises the physical application of pigment over the smooth, polished finish typical of Renaissance works. The brushwork is visible and expressive, particularly in the rendering of the Virgin's features and the soft, rounded forms of the infant. The palette is dominated by deep, earthy tones, with shadows that obscure fine detail to create a sense of volume and weight. The light source is directed to illuminate the child, while the Virgin remains partially shrouded in darkness, a technique that draws the eye to the interaction between the two figures.
By reinterpreting a classical subject through a twentieth-century lens, Teigen engages with the tradition of copying Old Masters, a practice common among artists seeking to understand the structural and tonal logic of earlier works. This piece does not attempt to replicate the exact luminosity of Titian's original oil technique. Instead, it offers a personal, interpretative response to the composition. The result is a study that captures the emotional gravity of the original subject while demonstrating the artist's own interest in form, shadow, and the tactile quality of paint. It is a quiet, contemplative work that reflects the enduring dialogue between modern artists and the history of European painting.
