A serene High Renaissance composition by Bernardino Luini, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the infant Saint John the Baptist.
Bernardino Luini, a prominent figure of the Lombard school, produced this work during the early sixteenth century. The composition displays the clear influence of Leonardo da Vinci, particularly in the soft modelling of the figures and the gentle sfumato technique applied to the faces. The Virgin Mary is depicted in a serene, maternal pose, seated on the ground with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist. The two children interact with a lamb, a traditional symbol of the sacrifice of Christ, while the Virgin watches over them with a calm expression.
The background features a detailed, expansive landscape that recedes into the distance, showing a fortified castle perched upon a rocky cliff and a winding river. This setting provides a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective, common in Italian Renaissance painting. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal structure, which creates a sense of balance and stability. Luini uses a warm, harmonious colour palette, with the deep red of the Virgin's garment providing a contrast to the cooler tones of the sky and water.
Luini was known for his ability to capture tender human emotion, and this painting is no exception. The interaction between the children is naturalistic, reflecting the artist's focus on humanising religious subjects. The attention to detail, from the texture of the lamb's fleece to the small botanical elements in the foreground, demonstrates the technical precision typical of the period. This work remains a representative example of the Milanese interpretation of the High Renaissance style, blending devotional subject matter with a keen observation of the natural world.
