A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the biblical vision of Saint Peter, featuring an angel lowering a sheet of animals to the sleeping apostle.
This etching and engraving by Johannes Visscher depicts the biblical account of Saint Peter's vision, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the lower portion, Saint Peter is shown in a state of deep contemplation or sleep, leaning against a stone structure with an open book resting before him. His posture conveys a sense of spiritual receptivity.
Above him, the celestial event unfolds. An angel descends, holding a large sheet filled with various animals, including birds, quadrupeds, and reptiles. This imagery refers to the divine instruction Peter received regarding the inclusion of Gentiles within the early Christian community. The artist employs precise line work to distinguish the textures of the drapery, the fur of the animals, and the weathered stone. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and volume, typical of the technical proficiency found in seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking.
The Latin inscription at the base provides the scriptural context, identifying the scene as the moment Peter sees the sheet lowered from heaven. Visscher, a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers, demonstrates a command of light and shadow that directs the viewer's eye from the grounded figure of the apostle to the ethereal manifestation above. The work reflects the period's interest in narrative clarity and the translation of complex theological themes into accessible visual forms. The print serves as a record of the collaborative nature of the era, often involving the reproduction of paintings by other masters through the medium of the copper plate. This particular impression captures the fine detail of the original plate, maintaining the clarity of the figures and the atmospheric quality of the vision.
