A poignant graphite sketch by Aat Breur-Hibma, documenting the lives of women imprisoned at Ravensbrück during the Second World War.
This sketch by Aat Breur-Hibma depicts a group of women standing together, captured with economical graphite lines. Breur-Hibma produced these drawings while imprisoned at the Ravensbrück concentration camp during the Second World War. The work functions as a direct observation of the conditions and the human presence within the camp environment.
The drawing style is spare and direct. The artist uses minimal shading to define the forms of the figures, focusing instead on the posture and the physical proximity of the women. The paper itself shows signs of age and the rough conditions under which the artist worked, with a torn upper edge that reflects the scarcity of materials available to prisoners at the time. The figures are rendered without extraneous detail, prioritising the immediate reality of the subjects over stylistic flourishes.
Breur-Hibma's practice during her incarceration was a method of documenting the daily existence of those around her. By recording these moments, she maintained a connection to her identity as an artist despite the extreme circumstances. The composition is unpretentious, relying on the weight of the pencil lines to convey the presence of the figures. This print offers a view into a specific historical context, preserving the visual record created by an artist who experienced the events firsthand. The lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the human subjects, allowing the viewer to engage with the simplicity and gravity of the scene. As a historical document, the work provides a perspective on the resilience of the human spirit through the act of creation in confinement.
