Frits Thaulow, a Norwegian painter who spent much of his career in France, produced this etching and aquatint depicting a quiet scene in the Breton town of Quimperlé. The composition focuses on the daily labour of local women washing linens along the riverbank, a subject that allowed the artist to explore his fascination with the movement and reflection of water.

The stone bridge, with its three distinct arches, provides a structural frame for the scene. Thaulow uses the aquatint process to capture the shifting light on the water surface, creating a sense of depth and fluidity.
