Description
Whipsnade in Bedfordshire displays a white lion across a green hillside, with red-roofed houses, grazing sheep and long hedgerows beneath the softly lit clouds of a clear summer day.
Carved into the chalk slope between 1931 and 1933, the White Lion became a landmark associated with the nearby zoo. Its immense outline extends for nearly 150 metres, above downland whose rare grassland supports butterflies and orchids around the surrounding Bedfordshire countryside.
The hillside at Whipsnade carries a bright white lion shape above a belt of trees. Below, brick houses with red and grey roofs overlook broad green fields, where small sheep graze in scattered groups. Hedges form dark horizontal bands across the nearer valley. A long low barn stands near the skyline, beneath cream clouds and the gentle light of summer.
