Description
Whitby Harbour in North Yorkshire occupies the River Esk estuary, where bright fishing boats and tall marina masts sit below red-roofed houses lining the wooded slopes above the water.
Centuries of harbour improvements have shaped the natural Esk estuary at Whitby Harbour. East and west piers shelter its north-facing entrance, while the upper harbour above the swing bridge contains marina berths, extending the town's maritime landscape inland from the North Sea.
Blue, white and red boats gather around a foreground pontoon, with tall brown mooring piles reflected in the water. More slender masts line the opposite bank beneath cream and brick buildings. A high bridge crosses the far right distance. Full green trees suggest summer, while clear blue water and broad cream clouds give the working waterfront a bright, open appearance.
