A sixteenth-century Dutch engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, depicting a moralising allegory on the dangers of intoxication and loss of reason.
This engraving by the Dutch humanist and artist Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts a moralising allegory concerning the dangers of excess. The title, translated as 'Wine Brings Man Out of Balance', describes the central action: a figure, clearly intoxicated, struggles to maintain his footing while consuming wine from a shallow bowl. A second figure, adorned with grape leaves, assists him, though the scene suggests a loss of control rather than mere support.
Coornhert employs the technical precision characteristic of sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The cross-hatching and fine line work define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the surrounding environment. In the background, a small, satyr-like creature carries a bunch of grapes, reinforcing the classical associations with Bacchus and the perils of indulgence. The architectural elements, including a distant rotunda, provide a sense of space that contrasts with the immediate, chaotic struggle of the foreground figures.
As a polymath, Coornhert often used his artistic output to communicate philosophical or ethical positions. This work functions as a visual warning against the loss of reason caused by intemperance. The composition is balanced by the table and vessel on the right, which anchor the scene, while the dynamic, unstable posture of the primary figure draws the eye across the frame. The print reflects the broader Northern Renaissance interest in human behaviour, morality, and the application of classical motifs to contemporary social concerns. It is a clear example of how print culture disseminated complex ideas to a wider audience during the period.
