A traditional ink wash painting on silk by Kano Yasunobu, depicting a wild goose among reeds with characteristic Kano school restraint.
This hanging scroll, attributed to Kano Yasunobu, demonstrates the characteristic ink wash techniques of the Kano school during the Edo period. The composition features a single wild goose positioned in the lower section, its neck extended upwards as it gazes towards the upper reaches of the silk. Beside the bird, a sparse arrangement of reeds provides a vertical counterpoint, suggesting a quiet, marshy environment. The artist employs varying densities of ink to define the plumage and the subtle contours of the bird, while the background remains largely empty to convey a sense of atmosphere and space.
Kano Yasunobu, the younger brother of Kano Tan'yu, held the title of Hogen, which is reflected in the signature on the work. His approach to the bird and flower genre relies on the economy of the brush, where each stroke serves a specific purpose in describing form and movement. The muted palette, dominated by shades of grey and sepia, aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the period, which favoured restraint and the suggestion of nature over literal representation. The silk support adds a soft texture to the ink, allowing for gentle gradations that define the goose's body against the neutral ground.
This piece reflects the training and stylistic conventions passed down through the Kano lineage, which dominated official painting circles in Japan for centuries. By focusing on a singular subject, the artist invites the viewer to observe the posture and quiet presence of the goose. The work functions as a study in balance and negative space, typical of the ink wash tradition. It remains a clear example of the technical proficiency expected of a master within the Kano family, prioritising clarity of form and a disciplined application of ink.
