A fine nineteenth-century engraving by Galgano Cipriani, depicting William II, Prince of Orange, after an original portrait by Michiel van Mierevelt.
This engraving by Galgano Cipriani depicts William II, Prince of Orange, based on an original portrait by the Dutch Golden Age painter Michiel van Mierevelt. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of early nineteenth-century Italian printmaking, where the engraver sought to replicate the texture of oil paint through varied line work and cross-hatching.
The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for portraiture of the period. His attire reflects the fashion of the seventeenth century, specifically the elaborate lace collar that contrasts with the darker, more sombre tones of his doublet. Cipriani employs a refined system of lines to render the delicate patterns of the lace, showing a high degree of control over the burin. The background features a horizontal lined pattern, which provides a neutral field that pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
Below the portrait, the print includes a formal dedication to Enrico Fabre, a doctor of medicine. This inclusion of text is typical of the period, where prints functioned as both artistic objects and social tokens of esteem. The script is executed with fluid, calligraphic precision, balancing the weight of the portrait above. The composition remains faithful to the original Dutch prototype, maintaining the dignified posture and direct gaze of the Prince. This print offers a clear view into the historical practice of reproducing earlier masterworks for a wider audience, allowing collectors of the nineteenth century to possess representations of historical figures through the medium of fine engraving.
