A modernist oil painting by Gerard Sekoto, depicting two women walking in a rural setting with simplified forms and earthy tones.
Gerard Sekoto remains a central figure in the development of South African modern art. This work, Women in the Country, reflects his focus on the daily lives of black South Africans during the mid-twentieth century. Sekoto moved away from traditional academic painting, choosing instead to document the social realities of urban and rural environments with a distinct, expressive visual language.
The composition features two women walking through a rural setting. Their figures are rendered with simplified, solid forms and clear outlines, a technique that allows the artist to emphasise the rhythm of their movement. The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, deep brown, and muted red, which ground the subjects within their environment. A small dog follows behind, while a cyclist appears in the distance, adding a sense of narrative to the scene.
Sekoto often utilised a flattened perspective, which draws the viewer's attention to the interaction between the figures and the surrounding space. His work during this period is noted for its ability to capture dignity in ordinary moments. By avoiding overly sentimental depictions, he provided a direct observation of life in the country. The brushwork is deliberate, creating a textured surface that gives the painting a tactile quality. This piece is representative of his broader practice, which sought to bring the experiences of ordinary people into the sphere of fine art. His contribution to the canon of twentieth-century art is defined by this shift toward a more authentic, socially conscious representation of his home country.
