A stipple engraving with hand-colouring by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, 'York and Lancaster' depicts the Rosa damascena versicolor, named after the Houses of York and Lancaster. The rose is known for its strong fragrance and its distinctive petals, striped with pink and white.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a painter and botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison, and for his stipple engravings. He was employed by Queen Marie Antoinette, and continued as an official artist after the French Revolution. He was nicknamed 'the Raphael of flowers' and published many books illustrating flowers. 'York and Lancaster' depicts the Rosa damascena versicolor, also known as the York and Lancaster rose. This variety is named after the Houses of York and Lancaster, who fought for control of the English throne during the Wars of the Roses. The rose is a damask rose, known for its strong fragrance and its distinctive petals, which are striped with pink and white. The leaves are a deep green colour, and the stem is covered in thorns. The print is a stipple engraving, colour printed, with hand-colouring. This technique allowed for a high level of detail and accuracy, and Redouté's prints are still admired today for their beauty and scientific accuracy.
