A portrait by Berthe Morisot, this artwork captures a young woman in a ball gown, rendered with the loose brushwork and delicate colours typical of Impressionism.
Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was independently wealthy and she exhibited in the Salon de Paris from 1864 to 1874. She became disillusioned with the Salon and joined the Impressionists in their own exhibitions in 1874, remaining with them until the end. This portrait shows a young woman in an off-the-shoulder ball gown, her auburn hair loosely styled. The background is a flurry of green and white, suggesting foliage and flowers. The sitter's skin is pale, her lips a delicate red. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Morisot's style, with visible strokes that capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The overall impression is one of elegance and youthful beauty, rendered with the spontaneity and freshness characteristic of Impressionist portraiture.
