A refined portrait of a young woman in profile, captured with the technical precision and soft lighting characteristic of Eugene de Blaas.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of painting during the late nineteenth century. Born in Albano Laziale to Austrian parents, he spent the majority of his career in Venice, where he became a professor at the Academy. His work is characterised by a polished, academic approach to portraiture and genre scenes, often focusing on the daily lives and appearances of the Venetian populace. This portrait captures a young woman in profile, a composition that allows the artist to focus on the delicate contours of her face and the soft texture of her skin. The subject is rendered with a high degree of technical precision, typical of the Academic style. Her hair is styled in a loose, natural updo, and she wears a white, lace-trimmed garment that provides a stark contrast to the muted, dark background. The lighting is soft, directed to illuminate the side of her face and the subtle flush of her cheeks, while the shadows remain gentle and controlled. De Blaas was known for his ability to capture a sense of quietude in his subjects. The woman's expression is contemplative, her gaze directed away from the viewer, which adds a layer of narrative ambiguity to the piece. The gold earring provides a small, singular point of warmth against the cool tones of the background and the neutral white of her clothing. The brushwork is smooth, almost invisible, which was a hallmark of the artist's commitment to a refined, finished surface. This print reproduces the subtle gradations of tone and the soft focus of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in nineteenth-century European portraiture.
