This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the god Apollo in a dynamic, suspended pose. Matham, a prominent Dutch engraver and draughtsman, was a student of Hendrick Goltzius, and this work reflects the stylistic tendencies of the Haarlem Mannerists. The figure of Apollo is rendered with exaggerated musculature and a sense of torsion, typical of the period's interest in the human form as a vehicle for expressive movement.

Apollo is shown with one foot resting upon a cloud, his body twisted in a contrapposto stance that suggests both weightlessness and power. He holds a sceptre in his left hand, while his right arm is extended outward. A radiant nimbus encircles his head, identifying him as the sun god. The drapery of his cloak billows behind him, adding to the sense of motion. Below, a distant, simplified landscape provides a sense of scale, contrasting with the monumental presence of the deity.

Matham employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the anatomy. The lines follow the contours of the muscles, creating a sculptural quality that defines the figure against the atmospheric background.
