Description
A detailed Northern Mannerist engraving by Zacharias Dolendo exploring the allegorical theme of women as rulers of the world through the power of love.
This engraving by Zacharias Dolendo, titled De vrouwen als heerser van de wereld, offers a complex visual commentary on the power dynamics between the sexes. Produced in the Netherlands during the late sixteenth century, the work reflects the Northern Mannerist tradition, which often favoured crowded compositions, elongated figures, and dense allegorical narratives. The scene depicts various men, including soldiers and philosophers, subordinate to the influence of women and Cupid.
The composition is divided into distinct groupings that illustrate the theme of female dominance. On the left, a woman sits in a chair, gesturing towards a soldier who appears to be under her command. In the centre, another woman sits with a child in a basket, while a man is positioned in the background. To the right, a couple is shown in an intimate embrace, with the woman holding a cloth aloft, suggesting her control over the situation. The presence of Cupid, the god of desire, serves to link these scenes, suggesting that the power of love is the primary force behind this reversal of traditional gender roles.
Dolendo employs precise, fine lines to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their drapery. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and volume, typical of the high-quality printmaking techniques of the period. The Latin inscription at the bottom provides a moralising context, warning of the dangers of unchecked passion and the loss of reason that follows. This print is a characteristic example of the moralising allegories popular in Dutch art at the time, where classical mythology and biblical references were frequently used to explore social and ethical themes. The work demonstrates the technical skill of the engraver in translating complex narrative ideas into a single, cohesive visual field.
