Commissioned by the Parisian porcelain manufacturer François-Eugène Rousseau, the service represents a departure from traditional European decorative arts. Bracquemond, a printmaker with a keen interest in Japanese woodblock prints, utilised the asymmetrical compositions and naturalistic motifs characteristic of the ukiyo-e style.

The composition features a collection of floral studies arranged across the plate.
