This study by Theo Colenbrander captures the experimental approach to form that defined his contribution to Dutch decorative arts. Known primarily for his work with the Rozenburg pottery factory, Colenbrander developed a distinct visual language that moved away from the rigid historicism of the nineteenth century. This drawing demonstrates his preference for fluid, organic shapes that prioritise rhythmic movement over strict representational accuracy.

The composition is defined by sweeping, asymmetrical lines that divide the surface into distinct zones of colour. The palette is restrained, utilising muted tones of grey, ochre, and soft terracotta to define the interlocking shapes. These forms suggest the abstracted silhouettes of foliage, yet they remain intentionally ambiguous, functioning as a structural framework for potential ceramic application. The presence of handwritten annotations, including the instruction 'zie ook keerkant' (see also reverse side), confirms the functional nature of this work as a preparatory sketch for a larger decorative project.
