This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the personification of Fortitude, a classic virtue represented in Western iconography. The figure is shown in a classical pose, leaning against a large column, which serves as a traditional symbol of strength and stability. The artist employs the characteristic techniques of the Dutch Mannerist school, utilising precise hatching and cross-hatching to define the folds of the drapery and the metallic sheen of the helmet. Matham, a pupil and stepson of Hendrick Goltzius, was a prolific engraver in Haarlem.
