This hand-coloured engraving originates from the 1581 publication 'Omnium pene Europae, Asiae, Aphricae, Americae gentium habitus', a significant collection of costume studies by the Flemish engraver Abraham de Bruyn. The work documents the sartorial customs of various regions, providing a visual record of late sixteenth-century dress.

The composition presents two figures side by side, identified by the Latin inscriptions at the base as a woman from Picardy and a commoner from Wallonia.
