Genius with the Alphabet - Sebald Beham

Sebald Beham, a member of the Little Masters, produced this engraving during the mid-sixteenth century. The work depicts a winged putto, or genius, positioned centrally against a dark, cross-hatched background. The figure interacts with a long, undulating ribbon that snakes around his body, bearing the letters of the alphabet from A to Z. Beham uses the ribbon to create a sense of movement and spatial depth, as it folds and twists behind and in front of the central figure.

The artist demonstrates his technical proficiency through the precise application of burin work. The shading on the figure is achieved through fine, parallel lines and cross-hatching, which define the musculature and soft contours of the child. The letters are inscribed clearly upon the ribbon, maintaining a balance between the decorative element and the legible text. The artist's monogram, ISB, appears on the right side of the ribbon, a common practice for Beham to identify his work within the competitive print market of Nuremberg.
