Description

A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicting a biblical narrative from Genesis, featuring hand-coloured figures and architectural elements.

This engraving depicts a scene from the Book of Genesis, chapter 34, where Hamor and his son Shechem approach Jacob to request the hand of his daughter, Dinah. Jan Harmensz. Muller, a Dutch engraver and painter active in Amsterdam, demonstrates the characteristic stylistic traits of Northern Mannerism in this work. The composition is structured around a central interaction, with Jacob seated in a tented space, receiving the visitors. The figures are rendered with elongated proportions and expressive gestures, typical of the period's focus on artificiality and dramatic tension.

The scene is set against a backdrop that includes a distant fortified town, providing a sense of spatial depth despite the crowded foreground. The hand-colouring applied to the print adds a layer of visual information, distinguishing the garments of the figures and the architectural elements. The palette includes muted tones of ochre, blue, and rose, which serve to clarify the narrative roles of the participants. The attention to detail in the clothing, particularly the ornate tunics and headgear, reflects the period's interest in historical costume and exoticism.

As a printmaker, Muller was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate complex compositions into the medium of engraving. This work functions as a visual interpretation of a biblical text, intended for a scholarly or devotional audience. The inclusion of Latin and French inscriptions at the base of the image provides context for the narrative, identifying the figures and the specific biblical reference. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between print culture and religious storytelling in the early seventeenth-century Netherlands, capturing a moment of negotiation that precedes the subsequent conflict described in the biblical account.
