Description
A masterful seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting the Holy Family with Saint Anne and angels, based on a composition by Hans von Aachen.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers, reproduces a composition by the painter Hans von Aachen. The work depicts the Holy Family, including the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Anne, accompanied by two angels. The scene is rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Sadeler, who was active at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. His mastery of the burin allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the drapery to the delicate highlights on the faces of the figures.
The composition follows the Mannerist tradition, with elongated forms and a complex arrangement of figures. The Virgin Mary sits centrally, holding the Christ Child, while Saint Anne looks on with a contemplative expression. To the right, an angel presents a spray of lilies, a traditional symbol of purity. In the foreground, a bowl of fruit, including grapes and apples, rests upon a stone ledge, adding a tactile quality to the scene. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides a devotional context, typical of religious engravings produced for a learned audience during the early seventeenth century.
Sadeler was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of works by artists such as Hans von Aachen into the medium of print. This engraving demonstrates his skill in creating depth and volume through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of drama, drawing the viewer into the intimate gathering. As a record of a lost or inaccessible painting, this print offers insight into the artistic production of the Prague court, where international artists converged under the patronage of the Habsburgs. The work remains a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by printmakers in the Northern Renaissance period.
