This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views in the Various Provinces, a collaborative project initiated by Utagawa Hiroshige II. The composition depicts the Kintai Bridge at Iwakuni, a structure known for its five wooden arches spanning the Nishiki River. Hiroshige II, a student and successor to the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintains the tradition of the ukiyo-e school while applying his own stylistic sensibilities to the depiction of Japanese geography.

The print focuses on the rugged terrain surrounding the river. The vertical orientation emphasises the height of the cliffs and the steepness of the gorge. The artist employs a palette dominated by deep greens and earthy tones, which contrast with the lighter, warmer hues of the rock faces. The inclusion of figures in baskets suspended by ropes provides a sense of scale and human activity within the natural environment. This method of transport, known as 'kago' or ropeway, was a practical solution for crossing difficult terrain in the Edo period.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium. The lines are clean, defining the textures of the rock and the woven baskets with clarity. The colour application is deliberate, using blocks of colour to create depth and shadow without relying on complex shading. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the series, a standard feature in Japanese printmaking of this era. This work offers a view into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where prints of famous locations served as both souvenirs and visual records for those unable to travel themselves. The composition balances the monumental scale of the geography with the daily life of the inhabitants, a common theme in the ukiyo-e tradition.
