Charles Clément Bervic, a master of the burin, produced this engraving in 1798 after a painting by Michel-Honoré Bounieu. The work depicts a young, semi-nude figure standing in a wooded setting, holding a dove against their chest while offering a morsel to a snake. This composition draws upon traditional allegorical motifs, contrasting the purity of the bird with the perceived danger of the serpent. The figure stands near a pool of water, their form rendered with the precise anatomical clarity typical of late eighteenth-century French printmaking.

Bervic was highly regarded for his technical control, particularly his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the linear language of engraving.
