Martin Schongauer, a master of the late Gothic period, produced this engraving during the latter half of the fifteenth century. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon the ground, cradling the Christ Child within the confines of a walled enclosure. This specific iconographic type, known as the Madonna of Humility, emphasises the modesty of the subject through her placement on the earth rather than a throne.

Schongauer demonstrates his technical command of the burin through the varied treatment of textures. The heavy, cascading folds of the Virgin's mantle are rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching that creates a sense of volume and weight. In contrast, the delicate lines defining the hair and the sparse, skeletal tree in the background reveal the precision required for copperplate engraving.
