This etching by Bernard Picart depicts a dramatic scene from the classical narrative of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. The composition captures the moment Mentor, the wise guide, leaps with Telemachus from a rocky cliff into the sea to escape the influence of Cupid, who is visible hovering in the upper left. The work was produced as an illustration for the seventh book of Fénelon's 'Les Aventures de Télémaque', a popular literary work of the period that drew heavily upon Homeric themes.

Picart employs a sophisticated technique of cross-hatching and varied line weight to define the turbulent water, the craggy textures of the cliffside, and the flowing drapery of the figures. The scene is organised with a sense of theatrical motion, typical of the late Baroque period.
