Description
A serene depiction of the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels, painted by Fra Angelico in the early fifteenth century.
The central panel of the Perugia Altarpiece, painted by Fra Angelico between 1437 and 1438, depicts the Madonna and Child enthroned, surrounded by four angels. This work was originally commissioned for the church of San Domenico in Perugia. The composition follows a traditional hierarchical arrangement, with the Virgin Mary seated centrally on a throne, holding the Christ Child. The figures are framed by a rounded arch, which creates a sense of architectural depth while maintaining the iconic, devotional character of the scene.
Fra Angelico employs a refined use of tempera, characteristic of his period. The drapery of the Virgin's mantle, rendered in deep blue, contrasts with the lighter tones of the angels' garments. The gold leaf background, typical of the era, provides a luminous quality that separates the sacred figures from the physical world. The angels, positioned symmetrically on either side, hold baskets of roses, adding a layer of symbolic detail to the composition. The floor is depicted with a subtle perspective, leading the eye toward the central figures.
This panel demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with humanistic representation. The faces of the Madonna and the angels exhibit a gentle, serene expression, a hallmark of Fra Angelico's style. The attention to detail in the textiles and the floral motifs reflects the technical precision required in early fifteenth-century panel painting. As a museum-grade fine art print, this reproduction captures the delicate colour transitions and the luminosity of the original tempera work. It offers a clear view of the artist's brushwork and the structured, balanced composition that defines this period of Italian art.
