During the late sixteenth century, these volumes functioned as personal collections of signatures, coats of arms, and mementos from friends, colleagues, and notable figures. De Bry, a skilled engraver and publisher, designed such plates to provide a structured, decorative space for the owner to insert handwritten inscriptions or painted heraldry.

The composition features a central rectangular void surrounded by a dense border of flora and fauna.
