Painted in 1433, this work is widely considered a self-portrait by the Flemish master Jan van Eyck. The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, set against a dark, neutral background that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the face. The man wears a large, intricately folded red chaperon, a type of headgear common in the fifteenth century, which provides a striking contrast to the sombre tones of his dark fur-lined garment.

Van Eyck employs his signature technique of oil glazing to achieve a remarkable level of realism. The skin texture, complete with fine wrinkles around the eyes and the subtle stubble on the chin, demonstrates his mastery of observation.
