Unlike the highly polished academic compositions of his contemporaries, Daubigny favoured direct observation, often painting from his studio boat, the Botin, to gain a unique perspective on riverbanks and meadows.
In this composition, the artist depicts a quiet, vernal scene. The foreground is dominated by dense, low-lying vegetation and budding shrubs, rendered with a loose, painterly touch that suggests the dampness of the earth.
