A classic example of British Pop Art, this work by Patrick Caulfield uses bold outlines and flat, saturated colours to reimagine the traditional still life.
Patrick Caulfield, a central figure in British Pop Art, is known for his precise, graphic approach to painting. Still Life: Autumn Fashion, produced in 1978, demonstrates his signature style: bold, black outlines enclosing flat areas of colour. This work rejects traditional painterly techniques in favour of a clean, commercial aesthetic that draws inspiration from screen printing and graphic design.
The composition is constructed through a series of distinct, flattened planes. Caulfield uses these to create a sense of interior space that feels both domestic and artificial. The left side of the canvas features a repetitive, geometric wallpaper pattern, which contrasts with the more organic, yet still highly stylised, forms of the objects in the foreground. A plate of oysters and a basket of leeks sit upon a surface, rendered with a stark simplicity that strips away unnecessary detail. The background includes an orange wall and a framed, diamond-patterned panel, further emphasising the artist's interest in the interplay between different decorative motifs.
Caulfield's work often engages with the history of the still life genre, yet he updates it through a modern, detached lens. By using flat, unmodulated colour, he removes the emotional weight typically associated with the subject matter. The result is a clinical, yet visually arresting, examination of everyday objects. The painting invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the items depicted and the environment they occupy. It is a study in balance, where the tension between the patterned surfaces and the simplified forms creates a unique visual rhythm. This print captures the precise lines and saturated hues of the original, offering a clear representation of Caulfield's technical rigour and his ability to transform mundane subjects into compelling graphic statements.
