Edwin Lord Weeks was a prominent American painter known for his extensive travels through the Middle East and India. This work captures the architectural and social activity along the Ganges in Benares, now Varanasi. The composition focuses on the stone steps, known as ghats, which descend into the water. Weeks employs a precise, observational approach to document the scene.
