Johannes Wierix, a master of the Flemish engraving tradition, produced this allegorical work during the late sixteenth century. The composition centres on a female figure, representing a personification of a virtuous end, who sits in quiet contemplation beside a large swan. The swan, often associated with the soul or the transition between states of being, rests its neck against her arm. Before her lies an open book labelled 'EVANGELIVM', suggesting that spiritual preparation is the foundation for a peaceful departure.

In the background, Wierix includes a smaller scene depicting a deathbed, where figures gather to witness a passing. This juxtaposition of the allegorical foreground and the domestic background creates a narrative of mortality. The inclusion of a shovel and a stone block in the lower left corner serves as a memento mori, reminding the viewer of the physical reality of burial. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Mors hominum felix, morientem Fata renasci', translates to the idea that death is a happy event for humanity, allowing the dying to be reborn.
