This etching by Bernard Picart depicts the mythological figures of the Danaïdes, the fifty daughters of Danaus who were condemned to an eternal task in the underworld. According to Greek myth, they were punished for murdering their husbands on their wedding night, forced to carry water in leaking vessels to fill a bottomless pit. Picart captures the figures in a moment of weary labour, their forms rendered with fine, precise lines that define the drapery and the rocky surroundings of the underworld.

Picart was a highly skilled engraver who spent much of his career in Amsterdam. This work is part of the Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France, commonly known as the Cabinet Crozat. The publication aimed to document the finest works of art held in private French collections. Picart based this specific print on a drawing by Ciro Ferri, an Italian Baroque artist who worked in the tradition of Pietro da Cortona. The composition reflects the theatricality of the period, with the figures arranged in a frieze-like manner against a backdrop of jagged cliffs and swirling clouds.

The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of eighteenth-century reproductive engraving. By using varied line weights and cross-hatching, Picart creates a sense of volume and texture, from the smooth skin of the women to the rough surfaces of the stone. The monochromatic palette, typical of the era's printmaking, focuses the viewer on the narrative and the gestural quality of the figures. This piece offers a glimpse into the way classical subjects were interpreted and disseminated through the medium of print during the Enlightenment, serving as both a record of a specific drawing and a work of art in its own right.
