This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi represents a section of a larger composition depicting the Last Judgment. Ghisi, a master of the burin, was active in Mantua and Rome during the sixteenth century. This work is part of a series of ten plates that reproduce the monumental fresco by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. The print demonstrates the technical precision required to translate the muscular, contorted figures of the High Renaissance into the medium of copperplate engraving.

The composition is characterised by a dense arrangement of figures in various states of physical exertion and emotional distress.
