A detailed engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, representing a section of Michelangelo's The Last Judgment, executed with technical precision in 1549.
This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi represents a section of a larger, ambitious reproduction of Michelangelo's fresco, The Last Judgment, located in the Sistine Chapel. Ghisi, a skilled Italian printmaker, executed this work in 1549. The complete composition was divided into ten separate sheets, with this specific print identified as sheet H.
The print demonstrates the technical precision required for large-scale reproductive engraving during the sixteenth century. Ghisi employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the muscularity and volume of Michelangelo's figures into a monochrome medium. The figures are depicted in various states of movement and emotional distress, characteristic of the Mannerist style. The composition focuses on the complex arrangement of bodies suspended in space, capturing the tension and drama of the original fresco.
As a reproductive print, this work allowed audiences outside of Rome to engage with the scale and complexity of Michelangelo's masterpiece. The engraving process requires the artist to interpret the tonal shifts of the original painting through line work alone. Ghisi manages to maintain the anatomical clarity of the figures while navigating the constraints of the copper plate. The print serves as a record of the fresco's state in the mid-sixteenth century, before later interventions. It remains a significant example of how printmaking functioned as a primary vehicle for the dissemination of Renaissance art across Europe. The attention to detail in the musculature and the fluid, yet controlled, line quality demonstrate Ghisi's mastery of the burin.
