Description

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting the Ochanomizu district of Yedo with Mount Fuji in the distance.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II is part of the series titled Thirty-Six Views of Yedo. The composition depicts the Ochanomizu area of Edo, known for its canal and proximity to the Kanda River. In the foreground, figures in traditional kimono traverse a path, providing a sense of scale and daily life in the mid-nineteenth century. The artist employs a clear division of space, separating the human activity from the natural backdrop.

The background features a stylised representation of Mount Fuji, a recurring motif in Japanese printmaking of this period. The colour palette relies on the characteristic bokashi technique, where ink is graduated to create soft transitions in the sky and water. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment introduced to Japan through trade, is evident in the water and the sky, contrasting with the deep greens of the foliage. The architecture of the bridge and the surrounding wooden structures are rendered with precise, clean lines, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition.

Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, continued the production of topographical prints that documented the changing appearance of the city. This work captures a moment of quiet observation, focusing on the intersection of urban infrastructure and the natural environment. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved wooden block. The result is a balanced image that reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, prioritising clarity of form and a harmonious arrangement of elements. The inclusion of the fan-shaped cartouche in the upper corner identifies the series, while the red vertical seal provides the artist's signature. This print offers a view into the visual culture of Japan before the rapid modernisation of the Meiji era.
