Description
A characteristic maritime scene by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, featuring a three-masted ship rendered in his distinctive, self-taught style.
Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman turned painter, produced this work during his later years in St Ives. Wallis began painting in his seventies, often using scavenged materials such as cardboard boxes and scraps of paper. His lack of formal training resulted in a unique visual language, characterised by a disregard for traditional perspective and scale. In this composition, the three-masted vessel dominates the frame, rendered with a focus on its structural components rather than realistic proportions. The ship sits against a simplified background, where the lighthouse and harbour elements are flattened to fit the irregular shape of the support material.
Wallis frequently utilised the natural colour of the cardboard as a base tone, applying limited palettes of oil paint to define his subjects. The black hull of the ship, contrasted with the red waterline and white rigging, demonstrates his reliance on memory and his experience of the sea. His work is often associated with the St Ives School, as his raw, direct approach attracted the attention of artists like Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who visited Cornwall in the late 1920s. They admired his ability to capture the essence of maritime life without the constraints of academic technique. This print captures the tactile quality of the original cardboard, preserving the visible brushwork and the unrefined edges that define Wallis's output. The image provides a direct view into the artist's personal history, reflecting his long career at sea and his solitary creative process in his small cottage. By eschewing conventional depth, Wallis creates a graphic, immediate representation of a vessel in port, prioritising the clarity of the object over the illusion of space.
