Description
A detailed 1546 engraving by German artist Sebald Beham, depicting two couples in motion, showcasing the precise line work characteristic of the Little Masters.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1546, belongs to a series depicting figures in contemporary sixteenth-century dress. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced small-scale prints that were highly sought after by collectors for their technical precision and narrative clarity. The composition presents two pairs of figures in motion, moving across a simple ground line. The artist uses clear, controlled lines to define the folds of the garments, the texture of the hats, and the individual features of the subjects.
Each figure is identified by name, with the inscriptions 'Fabianus Ienner' and 'Mathias Hornvung' appearing above the men. The text 'Onfang des iars vnd monat' (Beginning of the year and month) suggests this work may have been part of a calendar series or a set of seasonal illustrations. The artist's monogram, HSB, is placed centrally between the two couples, a common practice for Beham to mark his authorship.
The figures are rendered with a focus on the social status and fashion of the period. The men carry daggers at their waists, indicating their standing, while the women are dressed in modest, practical attire suitable for walking. The lack of a complex background keeps the focus entirely on the human subjects and their rhythmic, forward-moving posture. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the German Renaissance engravers, who mastered the use of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and depth on a miniature scale. It provides a glimpse into the daily life and aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-sixteenth century in Germany.
