Description
A fine engraving by Martin Schongauer depicting the Virgin and Child supported by a crescent moon, crowned by angels.
Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving demonstrates his technical precision. The work depicts the Virgin Mary standing upon a crescent moon, a traditional iconographic motif derived from the Book of Revelation. She holds the Christ Child, while two angels hover above to place a crown upon her head. The composition is balanced, with the radiating lines of the mandorla behind the figures creating a sense of celestial light.
Schongauer uses fine, controlled lines to define the drapery of the Virgin's robes and the soft features of the figures. The cross-hatching techniques employed here allow for subtle gradations of tone, giving the figures a sense of volume and weight. The angels are rendered with delicate wings and expressive faces, typical of the artist's style. The crescent moon, resting upon clouds, provides a stable base for the vertical orientation of the scene.
This print reflects the devotional practices of the late fifteenth century in Germany. Such engravings were often produced for private contemplation, allowing individuals to engage with religious imagery outside of a church setting. Schongauer's ability to combine theological symbolism with humanised, naturalistic figures made his work popular across Europe. His influence extended to many artists of the period, including Albrecht Dürer, who sought to emulate his mastery of the copperplate medium. The clarity of the lines and the organisation of the space demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with Schongauer's workshop in Colmar. This print remains a clear example of the transition toward greater realism in Northern European art during the Renaissance.
