Albert Martin

Albert Martin spent years documenting the industrial periphery of Amsterdam. Unlike many peers who sought the city centre, he focused on the Kostverlorenvaart and its surrounding sawmills. His watercolours capture specific locations like the Hugo de Grootbuurt before the expansion of the city. He recorded the exact positions of mills such as De Windhond and De Otter with topographic precision.

Biography

His style avoids the romanticised clutter common in nineteenth-century Dutch art. Martin preferred clear lines and balanced compositions. He often worked on paper, using graphite and washes to define the geometry of timber yards and wooden structures. Works such as Gezicht op het Kuiperspad show his interest in the structural details of the polder. He focused on the interaction between water and wood.

These works offer a window into a vanished era of Dutch industry. They provide a sense of place and history without the sentimentality of typical pastoral scenes. Modern collectors appreciate the architectural clarity of his art. His views of the Voorweg and De Valk mill fit well in minimalist or contemporary interiors. These views provide a historical record of the development of the Netherlands.
