Anton Abraham van Anrooy
Anton Abraham van Anrooy spent much of the Second World War in London, where he observed the Dutch government-in-exile. He received a commission to document the Dutch maritime court in 1942. His sketches from this period include portraits of judges and legal experts. He also captured the Chinese defendants involved in the trials. These drawings provide a factual record of a unique legal system operating outside its home territory.

Biography
The artist focused on the technical aspects of portraiture and interior space. He produced many studies of hands and architectural details before starting a final composition. His work for the Dutch court painting, though the final piece remained unfinished, shows his interest in stained glass and light. Van Anrooy used charcoal and chalk to create clear, academic representations of his subjects. He preferred a direct style that avoided the decorative trends of his contemporaries.
Modern collectors value the historical weight and the technical skill found in these preparatory works. The sketches of Pangeran Adipati Soejono and other officials offer a quiet, observational quality. These prints are often selected for home offices or libraries where the focus is on history and fine draughtsmanship. The neutral tones and precise lines make them easy to place in a contemporary room.
