Biography
A period in Rome proved formative. He sent home works in the Costumbrismo tradition, depicting everyday Spanish[1] life with the decorative flair and technical sheen that Marià Fortuny had made fashionable across Europe. The influence was unmistakable: warm luminosity, loose brushwork, scenes of popular festivity and domestic intimacy. He also worked extensively as an illustrator, contributing to Spanish periodicals at a time when illustrated press was the dominant carrier of visual culture.
Plá y Gallardo's career moved steadily into institutional life. He taught at the General and Technical Institute in Salamanca from 1900[1] before resigning to join the faculty at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he shaped a generation of Spanish[1] painters. He was elected to the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in 1924 and to the San Carlos Academy in Valencia in 1928, dual recognition that acknowledged both his Madrid career and his Valencian roots.
He died on 4 August 1934[1]. His work remains a thoughtful record of late nineteenth-century Spanish[1] genre painting, the Fortuny influence worn with enough individual authority to make it his own.
