Ernest Stephen Lumsden

Lumsden was more than a printmaker. He wrote the definitive technical guide for his peers. His book, The Art of Etching, published in 1925, detailed every chemical process and needle stroke required for the craft. While many artists kept their methods secret, Lumsden shared his knowledge of acid baths and copper plates. He spent years in India, particularly Benares. He often worked from a boat to capture the riverfront from a low perspective.

Biography

His work focuses on the effects of light on water and stone. In prints like The Jumna, Agra and Holy river, he uses fine lines to suggest heat and haze. He avoided heavy shadows. He relied on the white of the paper to represent the glare of the sun. His compositions feature wide open spaces and architectural details of cities like Peking and Jaipur. He preferred the precision of the etching needle over the fluid strokes of a brush.

Collectors value Lumsden for his technical accuracy and his ability to convey atmosphere without clutter. His prints of Paris and Edinburgh provide a quiet, architectural view of urban life. These works suit modern interiors because of their monochromatic palette and clean geometry. His depictions of the Ganges offer a historical view of India that is both objective and observant.
