A serene oil painting by Ernest Stephen Lumsden depicting the ghats of Benares along the river Ganges, captured with soft, atmospheric light.
Ernest Stephen Lumsden, a Scottish etcher and painter, travelled extensively in India during the early twentieth century. This work captures the ghats of Benares, now Varanasi, along the river Ganges. Lumsden focuses on the atmospheric quality of the light, which softens the architectural forms of the stone structures and the distant city skyline. The composition is dominated by the expansive, calm surface of the water, rendered in muted blue and green tones.
To the right, the stone steps of the ghat descend into the river, where figures are depicted in daily activities. The artist employs a restrained palette, prioritising the hazy, humid quality of the Indian climate over sharp detail. The structure of the composition relies on the contrast between the solid, geometric mass of the masonry and the horizontal expanse of the river. Lumsden was known for his technical precision in etching, yet his oil paintings often reveal a more fluid, impressionistic approach to light and colour. This piece reflects his interest in the daily life and architectural character of the region, observed through a lens common to British artists working in India during the colonial period. The painting avoids dramatic narrative, opting instead for a quiet, observational study of a specific location at a particular time of day. The brushwork remains controlled, allowing the soft transitions of the morning or evening light to define the scene.
