Gerard Sanders
Gerard Sanders spent his career in Rotterdam, where he was apprenticed to his uncle, Elias van Nymegen. While many 18th-century Dutch artists focused on a single genre, Sanders was a generalist. He worked on large-scale decorative paintings for houses, known as wall hangings, alongside smaller studio works. A notable piece is a triple portrait of the artist alongside Elias and Dionys van Nymegen, which documents the familial nature of Dutch art guilds.

His style follows late Dutch Baroque and early Rococo traditions. Sanders used a clear colour palette and focused on the physical texture of his subjects. In still life work like Druiventros, he captured the translucency of fruit and small details of nature. His historical scenes, such as Esther voor Ahasveros, demonstrate an ability to manage multiple figures and theatrical lighting. He often included small elements, like a single insect, to add realism to his compositions.
Modern collectors value Sanders for his versatility and the quiet precision of his smaller studies. His botanical and entomological works fit well in contemporary interiors that favour natural history themes.
